I am going to prepare activated carbon from the waste activated sludge coming out of WWTP.
Can you please help me in understanding, which chemical/physical activating agent will be most eco-friendly and most effective for giving high BET surface area and micropore volume of the produced activated carbon?

This is a good review article about the development of sludge-based adsorbents.
Ayushi..... Pyrolysis is the best procedure to treat sludge as effective means for destruction all organic contents of the sludge. Some inert atmosphere must be used during the pyrolysis to ensure limited loss of the carbon content of the product. The product can be directly used for adsorption as it is already activated by the heating... Good luck
Dear Researcher Dr. Ayushi.
We have Pyrolysis as one of the apt method, to produce safe to use activated C for use in portable modes and the temperature of the end process need to be high.
However if done at lower temperatures C - can be used for other industrial uses.
There are cases where the residues on clean up, are admired with soil- clay and used as raw material for baking bricks, known to have good insulation properties.
