in assessing the organic carbon in some rocks like shale, we usually measure what is called "Total Organic Carbon" utilizing TC analyzer TC analyzer (TC Analzer, Model: Multi N/C 3100, Analytik Jena). To get rid of the inorganic carbon, we treat the sample with HCL and dry it.
For your case, I suggest you do the measurement without treating the sample with HCL and without drying in oven (run1) . In that way, the carbon content will be the total of organic and inorganic carbon. Then you do a second run but this time you treat the sample with HCL and you dry it before the measurement. In this way, the carbon you will get is the organic carbon. the inorganic carbon will be (Total C (run1)-Total C (run2)).
