Hi Friends. I need to know which is the methodology to establish the hot forging temperature range for a especific steel. Not all the steel are in the manuals. For this reason, not always people have information about this values from steel making manufacturers.

During my experience in forging industry I have observed that forging temperature must be 200-300C above then upper critical temperature. you can also select forging temperature by looking CCT or TTT diagram of the alloy. By keeping temperature this much high gives several advantages like press takes less load, die wear will be quite less and material flow will be very good. But on the other hand you must also consider heating method. It has much to do with temperature, as for instance if you are using gas fired furnace it will take much time to heat a workpice to be forged and create a heavy layer of scale which is detrimental to not only die but will also produce forging defects. so in this case to reduce the scale layer you need to give less time inside the furnace and you have to make a compromise between forging temperature and press load. on other hand if you are using induction heater it will heat workpiece within seconds without developing much thick layer of scale and gives you opportunity to increase the temperature as much as 200-300C to upper critical temperate and that will not only gives relieve to forging press but also makes a sound forged part.
