I have to conduct an HR Analytic research, searching for correlation between HRM Perceived Practices and Business Performances, proposing a survey to 1000 employees of different organizations.
In the survey we can not ask the Organization, so we don't have direct access to the Business Performances.
Which is the best way to ask to the employees which are the business performances of their organization? Which are the questions that better predict/reflect the real Business Performances?

If you wish to get the perception of shop-floor (front-line) employees on performance of their organization, you can use just two questions
Question 1. How do you access the current performance of your organization?
Very bad
Bad
Satisfactory
Good
Excellent
Question 2. How the performance of your organization has changed over the past two (one, three) years?
Seriously deteriorated
Slightly deteriorated
Remained the same
Slightly improved
Serious;y improved
Usually this is all that you can get.

I think that the business performance can be identified by comparing the organization’s situation between several years, in terms of the number of branches of the organization, and the products that the organization offers during a specific time series.
I have some observations:
1. The choice of employees is important because not all of them have all the performance information they can responsibly answer (eg KPI)
2. The question is whether you want to focus on financial performance or take performance from a broader perspective, eg according to the intentions of the Balanced Scorecard
3. If you are looking for financial performance, it is advisable to use some form of scaling, eg increase / decrease (profit, sales, costs) up to 10%, 10-20%, 20-30%, etc. It is more likely to get data than if you require exact economic numbers

Firm performance are assessed either at individual level or at firm level. Assessing at firm level entails targeting managers and or owners of the firm with your indicators, while at individual level, employees can be asked. It ia worth noting that the type of information you are seeking for will determine also the nature of questions and respondents to it. So, are you assessing financial or non financial performance also count on who you ask. In any case if the information sought may not be available with employees, then you need to asked business owner/managers. In this case it is good you asked them about dependent an independent variable at different times. This improves the quality of reponses. Hope it helps.
I think you shookd collect the business results, ROI or ROCE separately from employees perception of how the business perfom.
The business perfkrmance indicators will be a fact.
What you need to ask employees is how they perceive the HR practices in their organization and them compare and seenif companies eith better results and perceived best practices in HR are correlated or not.

Of course, employee answers does not indicate the actual business performance. On the other hand, there can be a time lag between HRM and business performance. So I think organizational performance that employee feel is the important hint. I sometimes ask 2 questions for employees, "Do you think your current performance is good?" and "Do you think performance will improve in the future?". You may find some correlation with organizational conditions or HRM.
Since you're not able or allowed to ask the Organization about anything related to the org's business performance but only rely on the employees perception of it's performance and since measuring Outcomes should be a matter of high importance, why not just approach the employees with what they believe Outcomes should be and then proceed to ask if they think the outcomes were matched!
Business performance is not reported by any employees because to analyze a business peformance requires specific performance. For instance in the analysis the analysis is done on balance sheet transformed for the sake of analysis not on accountant balance sheet. Second you must know the measurement you will need to measure business performance is it profitability, is it growth? is cash flow generation, is market share?
