The medium of Niger (Staib agar) is recommended, especially in cases of fungal isolation from heavily contaminated specimens such as sputum or stool. In this way, colonies of C. neoformans grow dark brown, distinguishable from other yeasts such as Candida spp, Trichosporon spp or Rhodotorula spp.
