Next year will be held in portugal a orienteering event with approximately 2000 participants. In order to measure the impact over the local economy of a rural county we need to chose a methodology that give us consistent results.
I think most of the time the approach for quantifying the impacts is based on analyzing direct expenditures that are made by visitors and tourists and indirect benefits that are accumulated from returns on investments in infrastructure like roads and so on.
I remember that I have seen this article some time ago and hope it will help:
I think it is a very good question. Thank you very much.
I can add an indirect idea based on your question.
I think that it will be nice to see the environmental effects of these kinds of community events (e.g. soccer matches, basketball matches, conferences, political meetings) on the scientific publications.
For instance what is the carbon effect to the world of these events?
I do think that it is important for humankind to live in the least polluting way on the world on these days, so that organizing political meetings, soccer matches, conferences and traveling too much should be analyzed very well.
They may have very negative effects to environment and to our World.
In The Netherlands we developed a standard methodology for assessing the short term economic impact of sport events. All researchers in The Netherlands use this handbook en therefore we have already over 50 studies conducted with the same methodology. To bad the material is all in Dutch. But I can say that it is based on the model of Preuss (in link). I also added the link to the Dutch handbook and questionaires.
