Am working on pap smear cervical cell image, currently am using .bmp format to store images. I want to know what are the other suitable format to store the same and what way it helps to retain important information in an image.

If you want to preserve every detail, you'll need to use raw image without any compression, or at least a lossless compression.
BMP is pretty basic - just RGB pixels with 8-bit precision each.
If you want smaller images you may consider PNG, a simple GZip compressed BMP, that is lossless.
In case you want to store more bit per pixel or even floating point pixels, you may want to look into TIFF images.
The issues involved in this regard are such that one has to make a compromise between quality of the image and its file size. And file size depends upon the compression ratio. The higher the compression ratio, the smaller will be the file size.
While the traditional JPEG allows one to choose quality and/or compression ratio, and has several modes that one can choose, one may also try the newer coding method called JPEG2000 which is very powerful and is a relatively advanced coding and compression scheme. Besides other features, it also has a ROI (region of interest) coding feature wherein some portion of image could be coded differently and with higher quality, which could be very useful for several bio-medical image applications.
