Nationwide Greater One Horned Rhinoceros (rhino) is counted in Nepal every 3-5 years. Rhino count is a big event in Chitwan. The whole rhino habitat divided into ~20 blocks and each swiped by 30-40 captive elephants elephants with one observer on each. They head count rhinos and sum up to get estimate for whole area. This method is believed as most accurate but is very resource demanding and does not have any statistics. Are there any other statistically robust and more efficient population estimation methods for rhinos?
