I am interested to find out if anyone knows of any research or service evaluations which looks at success rates (recruitment numbers, retention of patients etc.) of running a clinical trial within a purpose built research unit compared to the more traditional method of running a study in the patients standard clinic setting?
I think this probably a research project that needs to be done! I'm conducting a systematic review at the moment (protocol is on my page) and I've seen one or two non-randomised evaluations of research unit vs other settings (hospital, veteran's administration in US cases,academic health units etc). I'm focussing purely on recruitment numbers, and as these are not randomised evaluations I'm not inclined to trust what I've seen on first look - will get back to you if the review shows more than one or two studies and if we can provide real evidence on this!

I have some data from a small project I did a few years ago for my masters where I looked at the reasons people elect to receive treatment through clinical trials versus standard NHS treatment. The results are quite interesting but it was such a small cohort it probably needs to be looked at on a larger scale.
