In my research group was created a java based signal processing software that could be useful to your problem. The webpage where you can download this free software is http://dcm.ffclrp.usp.br/csim/jbios/

Specifically, the software was created with a simple tools for signal processing. It is similar with ImageJ software, but only for signals (ImageJ is focused on biomedical images).

The JBios software already has a module that calculate de RR interval, so I believe you will don't have big problems to apply it in students lessons.

Prof. Husar - Thank you for your suggestion. I looked into the contents of yore book, but I could not find anything related with RR models/generators. To which chapter do you refer? Or is there software on the CD. I was not able to find the contents of the CD.

James Heathers - I know about the challenge, but thank you of reminding me. I looked again in it and found papers about submitted programs for the challenge, which I didn`t notice before. I don`t know yet if they will be helpful, because I need a detailed description of the algorithm so that it can be realized according it.

you could use the IPFM model which is easy to implement. You only need to specify a proper driving function which modulates the heart rate (e.g. two or three sine functions).

But he already should implement the IPFM model and the HRV generating algorithm according McSharry. I need for him a third easily to implement model. I thought about the DeBoer model. What do you think?
