While attending conferences, I noticed that the number of attendance for presentations are less in some sessions. I believe the reason is people are distributed between different sessions. However, the time for presentations are available for all attendees.
They are two different formats. Hard to say, what is better for you. Just look:
- Poster presents ideas more clearly: all together on A0/A1 paper. 'Poster'-format is much more relaxed for you: just print your staff and let it be hanging on a wall of a hall. If you are a bit shy - posters are better for you.
- Presentation-format is more lively: discussion, questions after your time, talking to the author face-to-face, etc. Presentations are also a bit more stressful and responsible: you are giving a lecture and everyone is looking at you. But if you enjoy attention of public and talk - slides are better for you.
The main paper will anyway be printed in the Conference Proceedings/Book of Abstracts. So it does not matter what you choose.
In my opinion, Posters are gaining more visibility than presentations.

In terms of visibility, I agree with your opinion to a certain extent. However, if you count the number of people attracted, it becomes another situation. Although most people attend the poster sessions, numerous posters are presented at the same time. These posters are not read by every attendee, and some posters are just scanned rather than studied. Thus, it is not certain that posters gain more visibility than oral presentations at conferences.

Visibility is most achieved through conf. proceedings, presentation is more important -in average-than a poster, due to discussions with specialists.
Done well, both forms of presentation can attract interest and allow you to engage in interesting discussion – as Peter Breuer points out, the discussion session associated with oral presentations is generally very short (possibly just two minutes if the alternative to speaking is a poster presentation, rather than a full length talk). Note, though, that you can always let your audience know where and when they can find you during the meeting to allow you to enter into more technical one-on-one discussions at a more convenient time. In this way, you could learn something as well as impart information. Polina Lemenkova makes a valid point about the ease of discussion associated with a poster presentation, although I cannot agree with the argumentation that oral presentations are more lively. Poor speakers – of which there are many – give no consideration to the audience, and tend to try to cram too much information into a dull, overly specialised talk. Both a poster and a short talk offer an opportunity to present work in a lively manner and can be used to attract interest to promote the exchange of ideas with researchers who have common areas of interest – they only need to know to approach you during the breaks between sessions! Exchanges likely to be of mutual interest will be continued by email, and then at future conferences, making them far more beneficial than the questions posed during a poster session or squeezed in at the end of a talk.
Totally agree with Suzy Lidstrom , I may add the ramp sessions in some conferences, where open discussions take place during a relatively more time.
Many thanks Peter Breuer , I may add that a specialist may constitute an opinion in one look at the slides in a presentation, especially judging originality, hence, in just one comment or question, an attendee can recognize the high level specialist and open a relationship during breaks or lunch, an example about that is authoring books, many books projects have been established between specialists through conferences.
I think presentations are more visible than posters. What can be displayed as a poster is published in the conference proceedings and pamphlets.
Each of them has special advantages .. More clear presentations during the presentation in the conferences of pictures ...

Presentations in my opinion lead to a more detailed discussion about the research especially that the presenter is explaining each idea point by point, and the open questions-answers after the presentation can increase the whole attendance knowledge concerning this specific topic
It's a difficult question. There must be special time for the seriously discussion of the posters in the academic activities, otherwise the posters have no academic importance, as seen some activities. Oral presentations are generally have more importance, especially for young academics, for giving an opportunity to develop their presentation skills.
In generar terms, presentations present several advantages in comparision to poster. Whit the audency, it is easier to reach more persons in the same time. Besides, the explanation can be more datailed
I think presentations provide vivid explainations slide by slide. The audience get to note points which may need further clarification. Sometimes the questions may eveb be answered before the presentation end. The presenter takes his time to explain and put across what he or she needs to say, and then takes questions at the end. Even though posters are also advantageous, they may not have enough infomation compared to presentation slides. I think the amount of information content carried across is key.
