The academic schedule in Semester System is very tight. Teachers are in a hurry to complete the syllabus. Students are occupied with tests / assignments / examinations etc. The semester break is also very short.
I do agree that semester system is very tight! But, in most of European countries and in my country, Serbia, Educational LAW and accepted Bologna process recognizes only Semester System!
Semester system is better especially for scientific courses . The only problem is the waste of time on examinations , results and registrations between semesters .
I agree that semester system is very tight, but it is proper for professional courses; as students have to learn no. of different subjects in less time.
Semester system has been accepted in all the universities in the globe. Even in its tight schedule, the students can be benefited with knowledge of more subjects. But, i regret to say that many universities are diluting the syllabus of many important subjects, only by keeping the view on the end results of the students. If this dilution of syllabus continues in the same manner for another few years... we can not expect anything form the passed of engineers... except a marks card with 75-90% on a very good quality paper...
Semester system gives the opportunity to the student for regular examination and upgrading them. It helps to reform the students progress timely. Regular examination and interaction between teacher and students support the quality education, etc.
Semester system is good for Professional course-work where the students are mature and learning on need basis. They can plan their work within tight time-schedule thereby achive their learning targets more confidently and with instant resutls. However, no system is neither good or bad in absolute terms rather it depends on their management and use, which must be both in letters and spirit as well as per the demands of context. Annual system can work if the context is favourable and supporting.
