After conducting 3 parallel research on adolescent resistance in Mainland China, Taiwan and Chinese immigrant families in Belgium, I did spot empathy as having the directive power to stop a disagreement from developing into a conflict, and therefore find your subject very interesting!
somehow I'm wondering which definition of empathy are you using? because there are many similar concepts. such as RF (reflection function), mindful parenting etc. and all of them overlap to a certain degree and yet correspond to only part of the total characteristics that our research discovered, and therefore I have trouble to choose.

Dear Yanfei, thank you for your interest! We used mostly measures of dispositional empathy (Davis' 1983 IRI, and Jolliffe & Farrington's 2006 BES), which both distinguish between the (cognitive) tendency to consider matters from the other person's point of view, and the (affective) tendency to feel compassionate emotions for others' misfortune. This distinction between cognitive and affective empathy is important, because these dimensions can have different associations with behavior. Two other important factors to consider are 1) who is the target of empathy, and 2) what is the empathy-inducing situation. Do I understand correctly that you measure parents' empathy?

In reply to your question, we do qualitative (IPA), so we don't measure but I sensed the directive power of empathy in conflict development in my research. Namely at the divergent point of going to conflict or peaceful settlement, empathy seems to be the key, which directs the whole situation to peaceful settlement; and to function this way, empathy from one side will already do, it doesn't even require from both sides.
However, what i sensed about the connotation of "empathy" is somewhat even a bit richer than any existing concept that I could find, that's why I was asking you about the definition you use. I can imagine that you must have done a thorough literature review and the definition you use must be the most updated. This way I make sure I don't miss anything important because my research aiming to understand the dynamic process of adolescent resistance is involving so many concepts in the field, I really feel short of hands to be thorough in every concept involved.

Yes, the level of satisfaction about life is important, I think the most crucial thing in life is only unconditional love. Do we have the full balance between physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual quadrants?
It's finally time that we realize true love has no ownership claims and no conditions. When we have internalized this, and live with total love, we are able to fulfill the tasks assigned to us in a single life.
