Just to say popularity should be judged in relation to the number of people who speak the language of the paper. And, probably, its printed availablity.
The data appears to be quite hard to come by, specifically because of the impact of digital media consumption trends, I found this source from 2002 (ancient history almost) that perhaps can be used to give an indicative insight into which papers have been popular - it may be worth checking up the top papers recent readership rates which I assume can be retrieved with a more targeted search "Bild readership" etc should point you towards more current figures.

The answers given by the above-mentioned experts give a good indication. Since I am based in India and source my research data mostly online I do not have a clear idea which is the most popular European newspaper. I agree with the first expert that language is important and should be taken into consideration.
