I don't know your background in programming but i would suggest you try doing some projects first with Python, kinda iteratively and step by step, it doesn't need to be complete, just try creating a small daemon using python.
[Fast Lane to Python and python manual] are good reads about python, if you want to learn it fast i think you better use python for doing as many things as you can.

python 2.x is the practical and more used variant of python in the moment but python 3.x is the new and better python, the point is not everything is ported to python 3 yet but you better start off by learning python 3 'cos it would suffice for most of your needs in my opinion.

Install Pythonxy or Anaconda... then use the tutorials mentioned by Joachim
Find a script that does something similar to what you want to do. Then load the code in spyder and run it. In the meantime you can ask google for anything because one good thing of python is that most of code lines already have threads in the internet explaining them. Finally start modifying the script to do what you want to do. I did that for one week and was enough to solve my first python problem. Regards.
