I am looking for a simple, flexible program for picking first arrivals and other phases. I've come across suxpicker (seismic Unix), zplot (from Zelt) and plotsegy (part of obstool, UTIG). Is there anything else around that works well? I am particularly interested in Python tools.
Michele, I advice you to see in the MADAGASCAR free-software the autopicking programs that probably are suitable for your applications (http://www.ahay.org/wiki/Seismic_task-centric_program_list). It should be a Python tool interesting for you. Furthermore if you are intested to use MATLAB codes I advice the free-software of CREWES project (http://www.crewes.org/ResearchLinks/FreeSoftware/). In particular there are some picking interactive tools that have a control on wavelet amplitude.
In my opinion it depends on how much is trouble your picking work. For example for marine Wide Angle Reflection Refraction the picking is very hard and an automatic or manual aided pickers are necessary and sometime the commercial pickers are indicated. If you treat with low density WARR data probably your used programs still are today a good solution.
I agree that with the technological evolution of WARR data (high resolution acquisitions) the picking is a research topic and development. But probably also new imaging approaches based on the signal processing , without picking, will be the future.
I coded a small rutine on matlab to do so. You just need a way to read the segy to matlab an use ginput or ginput2 (dowload from the web) to do so. Contact me uf you need any help with this.

At the moment I have on my hands some recordings of airgun shots on land stations. It is a lot of data, i.e. several thousand shots on ~30 stations. That's why I am looking for an efficient picker, with at least some automated picking capability. In the past I have used Kingdom and Claritas (both commercial software). I will look into MADAGASCAR and the MATLAB codes.
