When you block polarized light with a crossed polarizer, the polarizing filter absorbs photons and the filter gets hotter as a result. Thus the energy gets converted to heat. However, what happens in the case of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer when it is set to extinguish light via destructive interference? Where does the energy go?
