You can start by looking at varous sources of energy storage and their consumption i.e. from the concept of input and output in a control system. This gives you the idea of what you need to control and how to go about it. I hope this is helpful.

My problem now would be, what optimization software would be the best for modeling an energy storage system, for example following mixed integer linear programming. I am little bit more familiar with Matlab as that is all I have learned, but it would be good to know if GAMS or other programming softwares would be helpful.
