Where did the idea that a wealthy elite with leisure time to spare were able to develop intellectual ideas, philosophy and science?
I seem to remember this idea is often associated with the patriarchy of Ancient Athens but I'm not sure of any source texts.
Throughout Western history many of the great scientists, artists, philosophers were either of the aristocracy or sponsored by the aristocracy, be this the Classical era, Renaissance or Enlightenment.

Sumer, in my view of civilization.
The inquisitive were questioning how nature works. In Ancient Athens, it was not the wealthy that introduced the subject. Often the least wealthy, like the philosopher Diogenes who lived in an abandoned barrel (a cynic philosopher).
