Many papers use cutoff values for non-anxiety / anxiety with the STAI. Commonly used values are 36 and 40 for state and trait. However, many authors do not make it clear where these values came from.
-Looking for them in the original work: Spielberger, C.D., Gorsuch, R. and Lushene, R. (1970). Manual for the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Palo Alto, CA: Consulting
Psychologist.
-O, in the Spanish Edition of the TEA Company (easily found on Google and translatable): Spielberger, C. D., Gorsuch, R. L. and Lushene, R. E. (2008).STAI. Cuestionario de ansiedad estado-rasgo (7th ed. Rev.). Madrid: TEA ((Adaptation of Buela-Casal, Guillén and Seisdedos)
Thanks. You have confirmed what I am finding. papers with those values are two a penny, but finding where 36 and 40 actually comes from is not clear. I think many authors are taking it for granted that it is in the source STAI manual or something. Maybe I am misreading the manual but I could not find an explicit mention of 36 and 40 in the manual. Am i correct about the manual?
