I am looking for data on styles in which a bunch of (approx. 100) early 20th century European and American abstract artists worked in over their lifetime.
Examples of the artist I am working with are Paul Klee, Robert Delaunay, Mikhail Larionov, Alfred Stieglitz, Francis Picabia, Pablo Picasso, Wyndham Lewis, Piet Mondrian etc.
While the art movements they belonged to is a rough proxy of their style over time, I am not sure if the movements are sufficiently fine grained to capture variations in style amongst artists in the same movement and over time?
I am also looking for a way to measure the relative uniqueness and innovativeness of these artists over time. I am considering the following possible ways and would greatly appreciate any thoughts on them:
--I am looking for newspapers, magazines or other publications published in the early 20th century in Europe and America that ranked these artists in terms of their uniqueness and innovativeness. I realize any such ranking/poll is going to be a subjective reflection and that is what I am trying to get at.
- Another thought is to look at exhibitions or shows that explicitly showcased the most avant-garde. While exhibitions are generally meant to showcase the unique and innovative, I was wondering if there were any exhibitions that did this most vocally/explicitly than others.
I welcome any suggestions on the above/other ways to get at the subjective perceptions of uniqueness/innovativeness of these artists.
