Volume tables for Northern Red Oak (NRO) are derived from all over the USA. Various qualities of wood are evaluated with various types of volume tables, and from different regions. Regional differences in growth patterns produce different shapes of timber, often referred to as "taper".

In New England, the taper of NRO is different from that of the NRO found further West and South. Thus the need for different volume tables when estimating volumes in different regions.

It is difficult to locate useful volume tables for New England, and any suggestions on where to find them would be helpful. Use of stocking tables and conversion to board feet is a possibility for any tree specie, but the best way to compare quantities of wood is with total BF estimates described in volume tables.
