Fertilizer consumption measures the quantity of plant nutrients used per unit of arable land. Fertilizer products cover nitrogenous, potash, and phosphate fertilizers (including ground rock phosphate). Traditional nutrients--animal and plant manures--are not included. For the purpose of data dissemination, FAO has adopted the concept of a calendar year (January to December). Some countries compile fertilizer data on a calendar year basis, while others are on a split-year basis. Arable land includes land defined by the FAO as land under temporary crops (double-cropped areas are counted once), temporary meadows for mowing or for pasture, land under market or kitchen gardens, and land temporarily fallow. Land abandoned as a result of shifting cultivation is excluded. The average for 2014 was 260.71 kg per hectare of arable land. Dear Stephen Hilton University of Michigan, I would suggest identifying the largest dealers and purveyors of the fertilizers and ask in the area of usage and interest for the materials they are selling and any changes in the use patterns. Look to the extension department at Michigan State and University of Vermont to give a list of these people and then contact them for their data and insights. In general terms the highest fertilizer use N, K, P in that order and the biggest use is on maize in terms of field crops with should dominate usage. Recommendation would be 150, 50, 100 and this would be different according to P and K test. The main use is muriate of potash KCl superphosate and in terms of nitrogen the use would be concernated in ammonia since it would be cheapest source. There is probably a small minority of farmers using some manures and the use of cover crops has been growing and represents the biggest possibility to reduce the fertilizer dependency. One of long term issues is the potential of N use to lead to acidification and low soil organic matter levels. Rotation and cover cropping as well as organic amendment can greatly reduce all these issues. Good luck. PRH
