Thank you for your letter. Clearly I am a beginner. I am primarily interested in the connections between the senses and the neocortex. Clearly other animals have senses and no neocortex, so, I think that the answer to your question must be yes.

if You think a rat brain will teach us much about how human cognition works, than the paper above is worth reading. But i think that there are fundamental differences between rats, mice, and man.

I have done some reading on brain anatomy "The Biology of Thoughts"/Book  where they have provided a little bit information about that mentioning "The Neocortex",the cerebral cortex as viewed with six layers of neuronal groups .

It was mentioned that some brain regions have less than six layers(3 layers typically) and This is to say that such findings are possible.

This book tried to explain these layers and the different types of neurons (perceptual neurons).

You can also try to look for the following terms : "sensory homunculus" and "motor homunculus" .

You may read as well about the basic anatomy of the brain especially the cerebral cortex which can give you some insights on the functional anatomy of the brain :

- Frontal cortex : planning

- motor cortex : movement execution

- sensory cortex : stimuli sensing

-paretal cortex :...(sensing,motor ...)

- temporal cortex : memory,auditory(?)

- occipital cortex : vision

- subcoritcal regions
