You can modify most SEMs to record CL signals. Gatan for example offers a CL detector to be connected to a flange. The main problem is to lead the CL signal to the detector

This can be done with mirror optics to focus the emitted light to the detector or to the entrance slit of a monochromator for spectrally resolved signals. But the problem is that the size of the mirror limits the minimal working distance. So you have to increase electron acceleration voltage which decreases your spatial resolution.

Another possibility is to feed a glas fiber into the SEM chamber, either a big one (or a bundle of them, maybe together with the mirror optics) somewhere in the chamber or a small single one to be positioned on the sample surface. The other end of the fiber can be connected to any spectroscopy setup you can think of. But this limits the size of the sample region you can detect CL signals from.

So mirror optics is for big areas with lower spatial resolution and the fiber in contact with the sample surface is for small areas in high spatial resolution.

The latter one we use in our group with very good success.
