hi everyone, I have developed a simulation of a roundabout with a fixed time regulation, the lines of traffic lights in the roundabout are for vehicle storage. my question is: when we regulate by tricolor light signals, should we make all the conflict zones inactive? and is it normal that we will have vehicles crossing each other? any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance
While this is not specific to your question, two guidelines for using conflict zones:
1. Conflict zones should never be passive (see item 2 though). If you leave them passive, vehicles on different links will not see each other. This is expected behavior.
2. Conflict zones are rather expensive. Basically, when you have a conflict between two links, then in each time step, the zone will look upstream for vehicles that may enter the zone and calculate time gaps etc., which an approaching vehicle can then use in the next time step to determine if it can enter or should wait. Hence, if you are absolutely sure that no conflict will occur (most conflicts at typical signalized intersections), or if you accept some inaccuracies, for example when you have a branching, then you can turn it off/set to passive. But this is only an optimization.
you can still use conflict areas at a signalised intersection, but should be for movements where the gaps are not determined by the signal lanterns. these might be for particular movements where the headways determine the opportunities (even within a signalised intersection!). otherwise, leave them out.
