Some say it is used by US President Harry Truman in 1949 for the first time? This is a very powerful word instrumental in organising and shaping human life, our existence and relationship. In fact this powerful word created a new culture through which we experience and realize our existence and our relationship with others. Then, is inequality an economic or cultural category?
I guess, inequality is a combination of both economic and cultural category. It started under a cultural category but as we started progressing towards city growth , it aligned itself with economic notion of urbanisation and much towards developmental aspect.
It is true that urbanisation exacerbates inequality because wealth is created in urban areas. It does not confine to economic but what is being called a culture of urbanism.
We cannot and should not bypass urbanisation, but how to achieve an urbanisation which economically and culturally just? Present day urbanisation and urban culture do not lead us to this goal, but is alternative model of urbanisation possible?
I guess, the term "development" has a lot to do with the term "evolution" and the believe towards a development as a "way up" aspect and this believe should be as old as human culture
