When does one accept that a model has been miss-specified and how can this be corrected?
A research model may have flaw in the following aspects (not exhaustive list):
the research model is not underpinning on the previous theories / theoretical frameworks etc. after rigorous literature review.
the research model underpinning on the outdated previous theories / theoretical frameworks etc. which have been falsified but unknown to the researchers.
underpinning on reasonable correct previous theoretical frameworks etc. but operationalized with wrong / flawed operational definitions or research instruments / survey questionnaires.
due to lack of literature review / artifacts on certain very new area of research, the researcher borrow the irrelevant or wrong theories / theoretical frameworks.
From my personal experience, in order to correct the above model miss-specification, followings can be taken (not exhaustive list):
the researcher himself / herself perform further rigorous literature review until saturation.
seek other people to review & comment e.g. colleagues, peers, senior researchers, thesis supervisor etc.
present your research proposal / conceptual framework / research model during colloquiums / research conference etc. so that audience can comment - finding this way can also help the researcher to learn a lot from others or in different perspectives.

Thank you for your contributions Han Ping Fung. I appreciate the diverse (but not exhaustive) possibilities given. Also thanks Monyer And Al-Fatlawi for your consideration.
