Is it better to use kanamycin aesculin azide agar or bile aesculin agar when selecting for enterococci? Are there advantages of one media over the other? Thanks
You can use Bile esculin azide agar medium for selective growth of Enterococci.
or You can use HiCrome™ Enterococcus faecium Agar Base for chromogenic identification of Enterococcus faecium from faeces, sewage and water supplies.
or you can use HiCrome™ Rapid Enterococci Agar for rapid and easy identification and differentiation of Enterococci from water samples. It contains chromogenic substrate, which aids in the detection of Enterococci from water samples.
All these are the suitable and selective medium for the isolation of Enterococci.
It is always better to use azide containing agar rather than using plain bile salt containing agar media. Kanamycin is an added option which might improve the selection better.
