I am trying to obtain a thin layer of Copper on an optical fiber by chemical/electroless plating. For that, I prepared 3 solutions of 25mL each with the following concentration:

1st solution (Sensitizing solution):

Sncl2.2H2O - 10gms/lit

HCl - 40mL/lit

2nd Solution (Activating solution):

PdCl2 - 0.5gms/lit

HCl - 5mL/lit

3rd Solution (Chemical Plating solution):

CuSO4.5H2O - 12.5gms/lit

NaKC4H4O6.4H2O - 40gms/lit

NaOH - 9gms/lit

Na2CO3 - 2gms/lit

NiCl2.6H2O - 0.75gms/lit

HCHO(37%) - 20mL/lit

pH - 12.5

Temp - 25oC

I cleaned the optical fiber ultrasonically in acetone, placed in the 1st solution for 10 minutes, then in 2nd solution for 15 minutes, and finally in the 3rd solution i.e. chemical plating solution for 2 hours but there was no copper plating on the fiber.

As soon as I removed the fiber from the first solution I placed it in the second solution and so on. I did not let the fiber dry before changing it from one solution to the other.

I tried twice and failed. Am I missing something?

If yes, Point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.
