Good day,
I'm hoping to get a little more clarity on the process or workflow for NVivo 10 data analysis. I just completed my data collection which consists of 250 surveys and 1750 images (7 per person): http://www.untitledartist.com/survey
Thus far I have consolidated my survey data in an Excel file and cleaned the data as best I could for import into Nvivo. Once in NVivo I've been able to create a 'Node Classification' that I've labelled 'participants' and then I've assigned all the closed ended questions (sex, age, lang, res., country etc.) and this has allowed me to see the stats on these questions with the exception of country and residence which appear to need more cleaning in Excel as they still produced 40+ 'other' categories where none exist.
In the Nodes section I've create 3 nodes using the auto function and have;
1) Open questions (4 questions on net hrs, web use, where their drawing came from and if they watch TV)
2) Participants (which just lists all the ID#s assigned to participants)
3) Open Answers (which simply lists the 4 question above for each ID#)
From here I'm still not sure how to proceed on to my images and the coding of them. I'm usually quite good with new programs but after all the NVivo tutorials and several indy ones, yet I've not found a simple example that shows me the workflow A->B->C for a dataset like my own using surveys and images. So my analysis has come to standstill (and I took a nice break) as I've quickly realized NVivo is a cumbersome platform and things need to happen in a specific order for them to properly work down the road, otherwise I end up going right back to my original dataset (imported from Excel) to start all over again.
So I'm hoping someone has done a similar analysis and could offer some resources or advice on the crucial steps to setting up NVivo nodes and classifications to import all the images and properly code them. Obviously I would have a node for each image but then each image will also need to be coded according to the terms set out in my proposal as well as emergent codes garnered from observation. Basically each image would have roughly 15-20 codes assigned to it in addition to coding from the data from the survey.
I'm thinking that I need to have a node for each image and then the subsequent codes would be sub-nodes for that image? I've tried plying with image import but without success. I've started with my first participant #133, selected their images from my desktop folder and Nvivo adds them to 'internals' under "folders'. I then attempted to associate them with the sub-node #133 under my 'participant node' by selecting "code at existing node" then chosen #133 and nothing happens except that #133 disappears from the list under my participant node. The images remain under folders but why has participant #133 vanished from the participant nodes list? The only change is that on the right there is now a reference to #133 under 'node and 'reference'. Obviously I'm missing what's happening here.
Apologies for the long posting as you may have guessed this is my first large scale data analysis, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
