Recently, we have been asked to establish a Peer Review mechanism for graduate level seminars at the MSc/PhD level. The focus is to engage the student audience to participate more fully in the seminars by assessing their contribution and making the assessment count towards their degree mark. Do you know of other institutions that carry out such peer review assessments? If so, what do they consider successes and pitfalls? Does it work? What are best practices?
MA/MSc/MPhil/PhD level projects and dissertations are peer reviewed and viva voce or seminar is conducted by external examoner.
Dear Prof Dr Panayiotis Koutentis , Review of course is different thing, it can be carried out by respective subject committee and student can also participate if necessary. Your issues seems to be quite new for me too.
But, thesis or dissertation generally go to viva voce or presentation. Thats a type of face to face review of dissertation. I totally agree with Dr Subhash C. Kundu
The pear review can be enhanced quality assurance within the higher learning institution.
Dear Colleagues, I am not referring to Thesis evaluation by Peer Review. but rather graduate seminars, which are given as part of the training of graduate students during their MSc/PhD studies. These seminars are on topics chosen by the students and entail a written report and an oral presentation. Examination has to date been carried out by faculty but we have received recommendations to involve the graduate students in the evaluation to enable Peer Review. Hope this is more clear now.
This could be a very good idea. It may give rise to sense of participation and contribute towards motivation for learning.
If the assessments of individual participants from the audience are in written form, in that case the quality of these assessments can be judged by the teacher/group of teachers. Based on this, each individual student participant from the audience could be graded , and this grade could be considered for the purpose of evaluation of the individual's performance in the concerned course.
