child abuse is a major problem in the world but what are the issues that arise with it and that public health professionals are trying to stop but cannot.
Some of the issues include non-disclosure or reluctance to disclosure because some of the perpetrators are close relatives. There is also few experts especially psychologists involved in the care of the abused child. This is seen more in developing countries. Furthermore, some abuse are explained off as traditional norms. Some areas in Africa corporally punish children inappropriately in an attempt to cast out demons and the spirit of witchcraft. These calls for need for health education and promotion as well as empowerment of mothers.
A possible and likely critical issue in this has been inability to expand public and private sector funding for research, training, appropriate level of advocacy required and prevention.
It is of note that the child and family services, state and federal governments, and law enforcement, have highly vital roles to play to end child abuse and neglect but this is not significantly seen from each these quaters.
Child abuse and neglect are complex problems rooted in unhealthy relationships and environments. Preventing it requires addressing factors at all levels of the social ecology–the individual, relational, community, and societal levels.
There has been inability to appropriately and timely modify policies, practices, and societal norms to usher in safe, stable, positively nurturing relationships and environments that can help significantly check child abuse and neglect.These are my observations and contributions from my experiences on this issue. Some of the issues include under reporting of abuse and poor identification of abuse especially the emotional abuse. Physical abuse can more easily be identified than emotional abuse. People are also afraid or reluctant in reporting their abusive relatives.
