Are there a direct relation between increasing the TOC concentration in a polluted spring water and decreasing the Nitrate concentration in the same time?
The relation between TOC and nitrate: High TOC are the reason for biological activities in which bacteria consume the nitrate in dinitrefication process and decrease it. At lower TOC in combination in the nitrate concentration is increased.
I agree but would add that the high TOC is necessary to denude the dissolved oxygen so that the facultative anaerobes switch to using nitrate as the electron acceptor.
I agree with Alan Newman's assessment, but would add that depending on the nature or the problem, and the need to monitor the situations it might be worth looking at BOD or COD as well as or instead of TOC....it this related to discharge to some sort of waste disposal facility?
actually the problem that during pollution events from the olive oil presses, the concentration of the TOC increasing while Nitrate and oxygen saturation decreasing.
