If by culture the colonies look yellowish like Staph.: test for coagulase. Most S. lugd. are negative. Then we use the Vitek System with only moderately good results. The quickest, cheapest and best method is MALDI-TOF spectrometric Analysis.
I as Ibrahim E. and Warner S. believe Vitek, Microscan, MALDI-TOF (automated) and API system are a reliable method. API being the less expensive but more laborious and time consuming. Automated methods take less than one day for both ID and AST. API normally do the biomedical tests within one day. Surely, MADI-TOF is the fastest method about 2 hours but the instrument expensive, normally only available in big hospitals/research centers. In short it depends to the resource availability, API is reliable and least expensive. PCR is another alternative it has advantage of can do the ID without viable culture and less time consuming but again there is expense and logistic issue.
