Actually, these are two terms for a single concept; regardless the history behind this difference, today, rake is usually used by seismologists indicating the geometry of seismic slip vectors. it could change from 0 to 180 for strike-slip/reverse faults, and from 0 to -180 for strike-slip/normal faults.

Pitch is used by structural geologists (especially in microtectonic and stress state analyses) and varies from 0 to 90 indicating the sense of faulting. Rake completes the right-hand role conv. Pitch associates Azimuth/Dip conv. As one should use Trend/plunge for Dip-direction/dip conv.

rake is more confortable for computer programs, while pitch is easilly measured in the field.

Rake (r) is the clockwise angle of the slip vectors from the azimuth of the fault plane and it is measured on a fault plane. The rake takes values from 0° to 180°, and differs from the pitch ( pt) angle, which is also measured on a fault plane but either clockwise or anticlockwise, respectively, from the two opposite strike directions of the fault, and thus has values from 0 to 90°.
