This change in modes of production and economic activities has happened before when the industrial revolution brought about concepts like factory based mass production that required different specialisations and skills from the cottage industries they replaced. New skills and types of jobs had to be introduced and taught. The big difference is that now the rate of change is much faster and the environments much more complex But much as some of the jobs done by humans are being done by robots, robots still serve humans and they are programmed to serve the needs of humans. so the jobs done by humans will change. The new focus regarding humans should therefore be on which skills will need to be focused for the types of jobs of the future

Thank you Grace Mugadza. While being satisfied with your answer, I want to know about the rate of employment in future for countires like India, already over populated.

Only quality, competent and highly-skilled human capital will fit into the world of employment. Automation will create a window of opportunities for individuals and the concerned countries on the need for qualitative development of their human resources for job creation and reduced unemployment.

There are always certain areas where the finer aspects of human elements such as empathy, emotional intelligence etc., are required, where its human intervention that is required and not just robotics. Routine mundane jobs yes, may be robotics or AI can... definitely not in instances where critical decision making skills are required.

E.g., Car is driven using AI / Robotics . There is an obstacle in the front...which is a grand ma and a small child walking. Child is a little ahead of the grand ma. if the robot has to decide to shift the direction.... it will have to hit either one.... instead of taking the risk by breaking right???? That emotion coupled with intelligence and on spot decision -making ability is a unique gift of human beings

Arokiam, you have raised an important issue here regarding the potential challenge posed to HRM as a result of the robotisation of work processes (see my piece on 'the automation of work: where do we go from here' on ResearchGate in 2019). However, if we begin to re-conceptualise the debate on this issue not necessarily as robotisation vs HRM but as robotisation with HRM, then the problem becomes less daunting and, thereby, more complementary. Interesting.

Well, beyond psychomotor, affective and cognitive skills are the key to succeed in any environment. Whatever the sector is, the automation level is, if we don't surpass our existing skills which a robot can do, at any point of time, we can consider ourselves outdated, perhaps if this period extends, why not? extinct.

The type of human resources required will change. Rather than people who will do the same jobs as the robots, companies will need people who can manage the robots, or those who can complete tasks that these robots are not designed to do. Thus, personnel will need to train themselves right from start to fill up niches in the job market that robots simply cannot. Considering humans can carry out several high level cognitive exercises all at once without much effort, I believe that artificial intelligence still has a long way to go in order to render human resources truly redundant.
