With "translation" I mean as defined by Latour and used/developed by e.g. Czarniawska. I I would like to combine "translation" with critical discourse theory - and use them to build analytical tools to interpret qualitative data - but I'm not very familiar with the translation concept and not sure it's possible. All suggestions are very welcomed!

The translation process one way or the other deals with texts. Clearly, text is only the tip of the iceberg , the micro level underpinning the macro level features of situation and culture. Today, discourse theories are integrated into translation. In point of fact, the two have some kind of symbiotic relationship so much so the existence of one is dependent on the other. The quality of translation much depends on translator's awareness of pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic levels of discourse governing the message intended by the author of the text. As you have rightly observed, the translation process is nourished by the theories of discourse, which can shed light on the authors' artistic creation of the message and demystification of textual features encompassing the propositional content of a given discourse.

Dear Helen, your question made me simply think of the (many) ways you can translate natural discourse. For example: speech has its own grammar ("Spoken grammar: what is it and how can we teach it?", McCarthy and Carter 1995); have you ever thought of how you could translate discourse markers (such as: well, you know, you see..)? Christian Matthiessen ( Hong Kong Polytechnic University) and colleagues have done quite a lot of work in this area. They have combined language descriptions and text analysis and used this to inform translation.

Ian Mason and Basil Hatim's seminal books: Discourse and the Translator (Longman, 1991) and The Translator as Communicator (Routledge, 1997) would be an inspiring starting point if you understand 'discourse' as an ideological category. Following Patrizia Giamperi's idea, you could also take a look at my article "Discourse Markers in Audiovisual Translating" in Meta, 49:4, available in Research Gate.
A lot of work has been in this area. Just consult uncle google.

However, I didn't find any of the articles, books or texts that other people here on Research Gate have suggested to me after I posted my question. What a great resource this community is!!
