As I was reading literature several works have been done with 6M KOH electrolyte for supercapacitor application. I have read that K+ has the highest ionic conductivity after H3O+ among cations and OH- has the highest ionic conductivity among anions. So, I again came up with the question that what will happen if we take the concentration of KOH even higher than 6M?
In very high concentration, the ion association effect will prevail and the effective concentration will be much lower. The ion pair will behave as a dielectric rather than conducting medium. Also the effective Debye screening length will be larger. The effect of dilectric and ion association is discussed in an article J. Power Sources 473 (2020) 228467, for supercapacitors.
The 6M KOH has been used extensively as an electrolyte due to the high ionic mobility of K+ and OH-. The electrolyte concentration beyond 6M will give high ionic resistance which further decreases the efficiency of the overall device performance.
