I am doing research in silver nanoparticles application. Silver is the best medicine in many cases. If we give silver nanoparticles orally to animals, what will happen?
Well the question is way too broad to which a good answer is impossible to be given. There are thousands of papers in the web of science database that you can read regarding toxicology and nanotoxicology silver. Best would be to start with reviews first.
Yes silver has been used as a "medicine" both orally and as an injection since 16th century (if not before) until today (many today formulations are not FDA approved medicines, but medicines from Dr Quacks). Briefly what happens when you give silver (both nano or regular) to the animal by any mean is it will concentrate in kidney and in liver. Depending on the given dose, it may do nothing, it may altered the immune system function, it can cause gastrointestinal problems (may suppress normal gut flora, or induce histopathology) or it may be lethal. I worked briefly in clinic for nephropathology and one of patient was brought to us after drinking the 1 liter bottle of "silver water". "Silver water" is a very popular "quack medicine" in Asian countries - recommended dose is 1 teaspoon per day although no medical research that I am aware of recommend this. The kidneys of the woman failed within 48h and she died from silver poisoning.
This is the final rulling of the FDA regarding the use of silver in over the counter medicines:
Quote: "The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is issuing a final rule
establishing that all over-the-counter (OTC) drug products containing
colloidal silver ingredients or silver salts for internal or external use are not generally recognized as safe and effective and are misbranded. FDA is issuing this final rule
because many OTC drug products containing colloidal silver ingredients
or silver salts are being marketed for numerous serious disease
conditions and FDA is not aware of any substantial scientific evidence
that supports the use of OTC colloidal silver ingredients or silver
salts for these disease conditions" - end of quote
It is all dose-dependent. The best one used in progressive medical circles in the US is only 23ppm and is used for a number of infections both topically and systemically and even used IV (as much as one litre of 23ppm in one very slow IV in a 70Kg human). These are produced by high grade equipment and verified by SEM per batch. Many products out there are junk however. As long as the glutathione system is functioning, a pretty good dose of well produced product can be used without problems.
