We always observe a gap between the charging and discharging curve for different Li-ion battery cathode materials. I read in literature that polarization and overpotential is the main reason for hysteresis loss. They mention the IR drop increases, however that R is there for charging as well.
I will appreciate if you can share me your opinion on Overpotential and Polarization for hysteresis loss in Li-Ion Battery?
The galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) is a procedure useful to retrieve both thermodynamics and kinetics parameters. The GITT is a way to reduce hysteresis in measurements upon charge/discharge, because there is no IR drop (I=0). Also, all possible partial currents can be ZERO (not only the externally measured electronic current, I=0) at the thermodynamic potential measurement (potential limitation at long relaxation time values, ideally at time-->oo).
One of the reasons for the hysteresis in Charge-discharge plot is poor kinetics. Such a poor kinetics is again related to diffusion of ions. So, if you reduce the grain size or improve the conductivity of the materials, there is a great change that the hyteresis can be reduced significantly. To increase the conductivity, add some more conducting carbon to the base material.
