It is well known for decades that complex technology and scientific application systems allow to collect numerous measured information at arbitrary time points or continuously by having electrical, magnetic, optical, etc. sensors' and actuators' access to various points within those systems.
This abundance of information (tails of data) raised a question as to what's the reason to design such access points and practically collect huge massive of various information. The initial understanding was that it can be useful to analyze system behavior, to uncover and utilize various peculiarities of those systems' performances, to perform systems' performance optimization, and alike.
All of that is to facilitate the research of the gained data and extraction of useful rules, algorithms, and methods allowing for a quick assessment of systems' behavior, valid prognostication, analyses, etc.., which eventually provide an additional mechanism for the entire business monetization. Those are quite complex technologies evolving new methods in computer sciences, applied mathematics, network architectures and protocols, data storages and automation.

Big Data can be and will be applied to any industry and in my opinion, it will and should more be focused on Environment and Healthcare, which is very critical than other industries.

Several start-up or great companies interested in Big Data projects in different sectors (public health, finance, trade, transport, ...) are looking for new generations of Decision Support Systems (DSS), based on the extraction of data from unusual sources (social networks, sensors, mobile applications, ...), the storage, the analysis of these data, as well as their visualization in order to create value for the company. In contrast with the privious DSS, the data do not undergo special processing operations (ETL) to manipulate them, but their quality is as important issue that we cannot ignored. I think the future in Big data is smart data and quality of data.
All industries are going to benefit from data analytics from big data and this will lead to individualized customer needs. Great benefit and potential in health related data analytics as health data of an individual will have the potential to be looked at to even per-conception period (mother and fathers health and lifestyle data). Great potential for knowledge generation
In view of the above, it is also important to include in the above discussion also the following issue:
