At present, the dominant opinion is that artificial intelligence will find many applications in IT, teleinformatics, internet new media, robotics, industrial automation etc. in the 21st century.
There are many potential applications. On the other hand, there are research concepts that there will not be one artificial intelligence but many different versions and levels of artificial intelligence.
In view of the above, the current question is: What will be the potential uses of artificial intelligence in the future?

I'm still looking at AI as a Box of tools, each tool may be implemented in different fields as you have already clarified. I think, my point of view is so classic. In contrast, I find your comment "there will not be one artificial intelligence but many different versions and levels of artificial intelligence" is so exciting, but I'm still trying to catch a clear explanation about it!

Personally a more balanced question would of been, " What will be the potential benefits and costs of artificial intelligence in the future?".
Within the scientific domain more powerful computers will be able to do what they do now only more quickly. e.g. with increased (more efficient algorithms) processing power, computers will help scientists in finding significant patterns within very large data sets.e.g. Computers are a useful tool (I don't need an AI "friend" in which to argue with when it's programs get "tired" or "bored") .
Within the area termed artificial intelligence computers could be used (and are within evolutionary psychology et al) in order to achieve a more precise understanding of how the human brain makes decisions.
Will AI lead to a more comprehensive understanding of consciousness?, or will AI become self aware?. If these questions are controlled for within the framework of evolution, the process in which consciousness was selected for ( an emergent property, a beneficial adaption). then it's certainly possible that humans could develop a binary based AI consciousness . Research within evolutionary psychology et al, suggests that consciousness is the product of "wetware" ( the code being genes). Genes hold information, as do computer programs.Maybe the only limiting factor for a binary AI consciousness (or some other,currently silicon based computing system, such as quantum computing) is not currently having the correct programs (analogous to algorithms) and insufficient processing power. Or maybe gene selective evolution is the only way to "achieve" conscious self awareness.
The question is why would we want to develop computing towards being possibly self-aware of it's own programs, environmental inputs etc (Artificial consciousness. AC) ?. I'd argue that such a step should only be taken using the precautionary principle. AI requires resources (inc energy). I'm sure anyone could imagine the implications if AC had similar analogs to human psychology and "evolved" (post human development) to compete with humanity for those resources (of course we can always unplug it :-) ). The central point of my argument is that humans should of course use the best available evidence to base there decisions on. I'm sure most would agree that arming autonomous "AI" or "AC" computers with nuclear weapons (or weapons of any form.e.g. Drones) would be a sign that the "devils of our worst nature" are driving those decision making processes. As technology becomes (has become) more advanced , we will have to leave behind those stone age psychologies (on net) as these "flint tools" will have the potential to reap far more benefits thus also the potential to reap far higher costs to our civilization. If "the angels of our better nature" (To quote the title of Steven Pinkers book which I plan on reading) are not firmly at the "wheel" (or whatever form of guidance the system has) we might .....? learn by mistake ( the best case scenario if AI doesn't turn out as planned (what is the objective for AI ) and analogous to climate change).
Humanity already has plenty of machines (tools) that do kill people and plenty that save and improve life. It would be prudent not to develop (fund) machines that are more efficient at the former. So a reliable regulatory frameworks must be in place (e.g. Socially stable human civilisation (precautionary approach). Science has a moral responsibility. It could be argued that historically, certain scientific technological developments were not developed (funded) within a good ethical framework. Is the world (net human psychology ) ready for AI?, genetic technology?, easier access to nuclear technology?. Bearing in mind that the average human psychology isn't yet aware sufficiently to comprehend that it was evolution that "did it". Thus may not have sufficient information available in order to make the best decisions (politics etc).

The possibilities of using artificial intelligence are very wide in the future. However, some applications of artificial intelligence can be controversial because they can be a source of both positive effects but also can generate additional risks. One such controversial application could be the implementation of artificial intelligence to drones.

Home robots could help seniors with everyday tasks and allow them to stay independent and in their homes for as long as possible, which improves their overall well-being.
A very interesting question , what caught my attention was determining the future of Artificial Intelligence and the ways which it will impact our day to day life.
Artificial intelligence today is properly known as narrow AI (or weak AI), in that it is designed to perform a narrow task (e.g. only facial recognition or only internet searches or only driving a car).
Future is in cognitive systems:
However, the long-term goal of many researchers is to create general AI (AGI or strong AI). While narrow AI may outperform humans at whatever its specific task is, like playing chess or solving equations, AGI would outperform humans at nearly every cognitive task.
Artificial Intelligence was in the past and will be the future of the humans.
It has increased its performance in various tasks be it a medical ( A laparoscopic robotic surgery machine ) or non-medical areas like finance, heavy industries, online telephone customer service, Defence, aviation.
