E-Commerce has really revolutionised almost each and every sphere of our life.It has an impact upon various sectors of an economy.I want to know its impact on entertainment industry worldwide in general, and in India, in particular.
In Nigeria, e-commerce penetration is at its infancy. For now, the most popular sites for e-commerce are jiji.com,. Jumia.com and Konga.com. there are others though. However, since e-commerce is facilitated by the internet; you have others whose prices are denominated in foreign currency also available: amazon.com delivers locally and permits use of local debit/credit cards. I do not have data on volume of sales via electronic channels, that may be available from the Federal Office of Statistics or the Central Bank of Nigeria. I think that data which may also compare the volume of sales traffic on electronic and other outlets may be what you need.
Well e-commerce is already impacting the entertainment industry as people from many countries can buy their tickets on sites which specialize in the leisure industry.
But I can foresee another scenario: as it happened with the books and video publishing industries, the access to the huge databases of buyers who bought tickets to theaters, shows, concerts, etc or are users of movies streaming services will allow the data mining of consumers' preferences profiles which in turn will result in targeting advertisement and e-mails one-to-one.
Clearly I do not know when that will happen in Africa or Nigeria, but it certainly should be on the horizon in the USA and Europe.
The impact of E-commerce on the entertainment industry is enormous Nigeria for example, though classiffied as a developing country artists, managers and producers are employing this device to increase their visibility as well as market their products. Music can be purchased digitally online as well as ordered in physical forms. Independent artists are able to sell their music through sites like CDbaby, itunes, sportify and other local online music distribution sites while you can also purchase tickets for concerts, comedy shows online. The film industry is also not left out as Nollywood is now largely distributed and marketed online:major example is through youtube channels and collaborations between film makers and these online channels like irokotv, ibakatv. olekutv etc been hosted on youtube. This has practically changed the landscape of film marketing and distribution in Nigeria while global presence and visibility of Nollywood is increasing daily through this process.
