It is a very hard question to answer. Here in Brazil researchers on EFL/ESL are conducting projects in fields ranging from the bakhtinian Dialogical perspective on language to Queer Literacy.

In Poland that would be researching individual differences (there are regular conferences devoted to this issue) although reflective teaching (investigating identity, both teacher and learner) is also popular.
