3) Addition of Organic material (SOM): SOM buffers the soils pH. Soil organic matter offers many negatively charged sites to bind H+ in an acidic soil, or from which to release H+ in a basic soil, in both cases pushing soil solution towards neutral.

Very articulated question. Most of the OMs aid in cutting down the salinity of the soil . Some if the poultry manures are known to contrubute towards higher salinity of the soil because poultry manure was initially loaded with salts and heavy metals. Many times, mineralisation products fail to ionize further , thereby, cintrubuting one or the other form of salinity. On the other hand , traditionally used organic manures as carrier of different forms of organic matter reduce soil salinity. There are very limited reportz where OM additions increased salinity of a non-saline soils.

It would be further interesting to debate this issue with regard to behavior of OM in saline versus non- saline soils....

Dr. Anoop has provided an insightful reply and i agree that OMs reduce salinity level of the soil in general but poultry manures contribute towards higher salinity

well, any kind of organic matter will release organic acids upon decaying.

so acid will result into lowering of Ph.

so all kinds of organic materials shall be definitely reducing soil salinity per se insted of increasing it anywhere.thanks

organic matter with high nitrogen content will decrease the salinity of the soil, and vice versa. Decrease soil salinity can be done by increasing the rate of nitrification. Increased nitrification rate on saline soil can be done with the provision of organic materials containing nitrogen nutrient content.

organic matter with high nitrogen content commonly decomposed to be amino acids and minerals (NH4+ or NO3-), these ions will be react to a couple ions of the salinity. Therefore will decrease the salinity of the soil.

Whatever organic residues are applied, the outcomes are determinedly an enormous amount of organic acid, NH4 , NO3 which formed by the nitrification process. In these circumstances, all these components could modify the high pH of the saline soil and microbial community resulting to an improved soil structure and plant growth.
