There might be LES-findings which could be applied to 'free' motions of rigid bodies and vice versa. For example the Boomerang and Magnus effect. A Principle could be that a whirl is formed where energy is collected and after a while it is resolved into a uniaxial motion in another suitable (which sometimes means new) direction ( in order to fill space or escape(?)).

A study of a free motion is found in attached file.

Additional subject: Free motion of a rigid body is a chaotic motion, which maybe also could be treated by laminar-turbulence/LES framework. Details involve SO(3) and angular velocity,  which relates to skew part of the velocity gradient.

An illustration is given in latter attachment. It is very easy to obtain the middle mode, so the conditions for deviation in direction and inplane angle are large and should be possible to quantify.

I can suggest a classical text by Robert Devaney: An Introduction to Chaotic Dynamical Systems,Addison-Wesley (1989). Even though his definition of chaos has been observed as redundant, I think that Devaney's books and articles are a good reference.

Perhaps it is worth to expand the question:

what new TYPES of chaotic behavior have been discovered in recent years,

what new APPLIED ASPECTS of chaos began to be studied and to be implemented within the framework of new technologies?

Perhaps these issues have not yet been worked out (in comparison with the classical statements of problems considered in known works)...
