More and more countries are doing seawater desalination.
During this desalination operation huge quantities of salt (brine) are produced.
These salts are generally often thrown into the sea.
Many people rightly or wrongly think that these salts are harmful to flora and fauna.
Can we reuse these salts to make other useful products?
Brine is used for food processing and cooking (pickling and brining), for de-icing of roads and other structures, and in a number of technological processes
The salt so obtained as by product can be processed further to produce table salts and in preparing analytical salt reagents.

The byproduct or waste product of desalination process of seawater is the highly concentrated brine. This brine is devoid of dissolved oxygen. It is usually being disposed by dumping it back in to the sea water which is thereby damaging the marine environment.
In Algeria, it is important to take into consideration the great diversity of the climate and its irregularity in space and time. To meet this demand, the desalination of sea water (and on a smaller scale, that of brackish water) is an attractive and economical solution, contributing to a sustainable development of the country concerned for several reasons:
• the immense available and inexhaustible seawater reserves;
• the significant drop in the cost of desalination;
• the fact that desalination provides a solution to various needs: domestic and industrial uses, agricultural uses, water treatment.

If you run RO at 50% water recovery to minimise fouling, the brine concentration is only double the initial concentration, ocean discharge is very common. We discharge more toxic chemicals into the ocean than the high salt concentration brine.
