I have been working in the field of forest research for a decade and a half so far.
I have experienced different events during submitting manuscripts and revisions and I think the process of reviewing manuscripts isn't fair and is only in the favor of the editors.
Let me explain a real situation, I have submitted a manuscript in "Arabian Journal of Geoscience" ( https://www.springer.com/earth+sciences+and+geography/journal/12517) on 12 Mar 2019 and today it has been 196 days since I made the mistake and the status of the MS is still "pending for editor". I have sent several emails to the editor and the manager, but mostly I receive no response or the same email which I think is only copy and past of the same text.
Now, my student so far has lost half a year and I can't even withdraw the ms.
I even sent springer "contact us' ID explaining the problem, but still, nothing happened.
I am really getting more and more disappointed to see that the whole process is mostly a marketing job rather than a scientific responsibility or an ethical act.

In my point of view: Spending more time to write a paper and submit it to a high ranked h index journal is preferable.

You can submit to a high ranked journal and declare it is with AJG but state it is being withdrawn. Also write to AJG to formally withdraw the paper.

It is disgusted when review progress extrebdes to unbderirable time llimit
or even publition takes much longer time even after review process is completed.
I wonder at times whether the business model of some of the purely Open Access Journals is such that there is an extremely limited amount of resources being directed into the manuscript management processes. If there is only one person undertaking all of these functions you can imagine what happens for example when they go on leave and/or they are simultaneously managing a range of journals for the same publisher. However if there are unacceptable delays combined with a lack of communication wrt manuscripts then it is best to not keep trying to engage any further but instead move on and try another journal! I hope that this thread is read by all of the members of RG who either sit on the Editorial Boards of Open Access journals or undertake manuscript reviews.
