We often download tons of research paper related to our Ph.D research domain in their default filename format. After few days, recollecting and finding a particular paper becomes difficult. Any tips on what file naming strategy to adopt while downloading these papers?
This is a common issue in research and I use a structured approach to handle this issue. You can follow the below steps:
1. Create a mother folder for your research
2. Identify major areas of your research and create those folders within the mother folders and name the as 01 Literature Review 02 Statistical Approach etc.
3. Now when you download a paper identify the objective i.e. the purpose you will use it. Also categorise broadly into journal, conference, report, web article. Then source (Net, Scan) and year
4.Use the following naming convention:
< Paper Name>_ < Classification i.e. Journal, Conference paper, etc.> _ _ _ < Research Area>
5. Then put the article within the respective research area folder
Though need some time but will save much more time.

I absolutely agree with Mr. Shirshendu Roy. The folder-based approach to the collection process is the best one. Usually, I download the papers into the specific folders that are intended to fulfill my own publication. Good luck!
